Failed the P&C exam? How retakes work
If you fail the P&C exam, you can usually book it again within days: the next day in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Michigan, after 24 hours in Illinois and North Carolina, and after 14 days in Georgia. Florida caps attempts at five per exam type in 12 months (vendor handbooks, checked October 8, 2026).
Georgia sets the longest first wait we found: 14 days after a first or second attempt, 60 days after a third or later (Pearson VUE Georgia handbook). Texas lets you rebook after 1 day, and Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Michigan from the next day.

Before you rebook
A failed sitting feels final on the day the result comes up. By the rules it is a short delay: a new booking, a new fee, and in Texas, Georgia and Ohio no cap on attempts. You are not starting from zero either. The general block covers the same coverage parts the next time; what changes is where your hours go.
Write down which parts felt unfamiliar while the sitting is fresh. A miss on an EXCEPT stem in homeowners insurance and a miss on a trigger question in claims-made vs occurrence call for different fixes, and the list tells you which drills come first.

Run the category drills for the parts on your list before anything else. The P&C study plan rebuilds the calendar from your new exam date.
- Final days
One timed run

- Booking day
Check the rule for your attempt
Georgia's wait grows to 60 days after a third attempt, and a fifth attempt in 12 months is Florida's last for that exam type (vendor handbooks, checked October 8, 2026).
After a fail
Do I pay again to retake the P&C exam?
Plan on it: in the handbooks we read, a retake is a new booking with a new fee. North Carolina lists its $45 per attempt (Pearson VUE North Carolina handbook, checked October 8, 2026). Your state's fee is on the P&C license cost page.
Should I take the first open seat?
Book when the misses are fixed. A next-day slot helps if the gap was timing or nerves; a content gap needs drill time first. What the P&C exam tests helps you sort which one it was.
Is there a limit on attempts?
Florida caps it at 5 attempts per exam type in 12 months; Texas and Georgia list no limit, and Ohio allows unlimited retakes (vendor handbooks and bulletins, checked October 8, 2026).
