How to get a Florida 2-20 general lines license

A Florida 2-20 is the resident general lines agent license, Florida's full property and casualty license. You qualify through a 200-hour approved course or one of the alternatives the Department of Financial Services (DFS) accepts, apply online, get fingerprinted, and pass the 3-hour General Lines Agent exam at Pearson VUE (DFS 2-20 checklist and Pearson VUE Florida handbook, checked October 8, 2026).

The DFS checklist, step by step

  1. Meet the basics

Be at least 18, a Florida resident, and a US citizen or a legal alien with work authorization, and hold no resident license in another state.

  2. Complete a qualifying route

The 200-hour course, or one of the alternatives in the table below. Pre-licensing hours in the other states we checked are far lower.

  3. Apply online and pay

The 2024 Pearson VUE Florida handbook lists a $50 application fee and a $5 license identification fee. Fingerprinting is paid to the vendor separately.

  4. Send proof of the prerequisite

Course providers send it to DFS themselves, within 21 days of your passing date. Other routes are documented by email.

  5. Get fingerprinted

Required for every applicant on this checklist.

  6. Take the exam

After approval, DFS posts an exam authorization to your MyProfile account and you schedule with Pearson VUE. If you passed within the year before applying, skip this step.

  7. Watch MyProfile

Missing items show as deficiencies under the pending license. Approval arrives by email, and you print the license from MyProfile. An insurer then appoints you, as in any state; the general licensing path covers appointment and renewal.

The license numbers around the 2-20

2-20
General lines agent: property, casualty, surety, marine, health and miscellaneous lines. DFS lists autos, watercraft, homes, errors and omissions, workers compensation and bonds among its uses.
20-44
Personal lines agent, a narrower license. Full P&C vs personal lines compares the two.
4-40
Customer representative, one of the three licenses that can upgrade to the 2-20 with experience and a 40-hour course.
0-55
Service representative, the third upgrade path.

Florida, before you apply

Can I sit for the 2-20 exam without the 200-hour course?

Yes, through the experience routes: a year of full-time P&C duties, or a year as a licensed 4-40, 20-44 or 0-55 plus a 40-hour course. The degree, CPCU and new-resident routes skip the exam (DFS 2-20 checklist, checked October 8, 2026).

Is the 70% a scaled score?

No. The handbook computes it as the number of items answered correctly divided by the total (Pearson VUE Florida handbook, checked October 8, 2026). Texas, by contrast, reports a scaled 70; passing scores by state sorts out which is which.

Which fees go to Pearson VUE and which to DFS?

The 2024 handbook lists a $44 exam fee paid to Pearson VUE, and a $50 application fee and a $5 license ID fee paid to the department (Pearson VUE Florida handbook, checked October 8, 2026), plus fingerprinting and the course. P&C license cost sets Florida beside the other states we checked.

Does a 2-20 cover health insurance too?

Its lines include health along with property, casualty, surety, marine and miscellaneous lines, and DFS notes that a health insurer can appoint a 2-20 holder (DFS 2-20 checklist, checked October 8, 2026). For the general P&C part of the exam, the P&C practice test is a place to start.
