How much does a P&C license cost?

A P&C license costs at least two fees, both set by your state: the exam fee paid to the testing vendor ($38 to $92 per exam in the states we checked) and the license or application fee paid to the state ($10 per line in Ohio up to $188 in California). Fingerprinting, pre-licensing education and any retake come on top (sources below, checked October 8, 2026).

Exam fee$38–$92per exam, by state

New Jersey's PSI exam fee is $38 (PSI New Jersey bulletin), and Illinois charges $92 per exam, a figure that includes a $50 Illinois administrative fee. Both states test Property and Casualty separately, so a full P&C license there means more than one exam fee.

Sources: California Department of Insurance fee page and Pearson VUE Georgia handbook. Both checked October 8, 2026. California also requires a 12-hour ethics and California Insurance Code course, due before the license is issued; Georgia requires a pre-licensing course taken within the last 12 months.

Costs that arrive later

  • A retake is a new exam fee. North Carolina lists its $45 per attempt (Pearson VUE North Carolina handbook, checked October 8, 2026). Waiting periods are on the P&C exam retake rules page.
  • Pre-licensing education where your state requires it, from none in Texas (TDI) to 200 hours in Florida (Florida DFS 2-20 requirements), both checked October 8, 2026. Course formats are on the P&C pre-licensing course page.
  • An appointment before you sell for an insurer. California lists $32 for an Action Notice of Appointment (CDI fee page) and Texas $10 per additional appointment (TDI application page), checked October 8, 2026.
  • Renewal: $188 in California, $150 every 2 years in New Jersey (NJ DOBI FAQ), $40 per year of a two-year license in New York (checked October 8, 2026). Continuing education is on the P&C license renewal and CE page.
  • Florida's order: you apply to the Department of Financial Services and get exam authorization before you book, so the application fee comes first. The Florida 2-20 license page has the sequence.

Paying for the license

Does the exam fee include the license?

No. The vendor's fee pays for the sitting; the state charges its own application or license fee, after you pass, except in Florida, where the application comes before you book. Both are in the fee table above, checked October 8, 2026.

What does fingerprinting cost?

Ohio lists $72.25 for WebCheck fingerprinting at a PSI center (PSI Ohio bulletin, checked October 8, 2026). For the other states we checked, we could not confirm a fingerprint price from a primary source, so check your state's instructions before you book.

Where does the time go, compared with the money?

Pre-licensing hours and the application review set the calendar. The P&C licensing timeline page lays it out by state, and how to get a P&C license gives the steps in order.

Make the exam fee count

Prepare for the general block before you pay for a sitting, so one exam fee is the plan.
