Exam factPassing score

As ofOctober 8, 2026

What score do you need to pass the P&C exam?

Eight of the twelve states we checked set the pass mark at 70, and that 70 comes in two kinds: a scaled score in Texas, Illinois and North Carolina, and 70% of scored questions right in Georgia, Florida, New York, Ohio and New Jersey. California passes candidates at 60% and Michigan at 74% (each state's bulletin, checked October 8, 2026).

Pass mark708 of 12 states checked

Texas reports a scaled 70 (Pearson VUE Texas handbook); Florida requires 70% correct (Pearson VUE Florida handbook). California sets 60% and Michigan 74% on their combined exams. No passing score applies nationally, because no national exam exists.

Scaled score and percent correct

Scaled 70
Your raw result converted onto a reporting scale, so different versions of the exam are held to one standard. The number of right answers behind a 70 is not a fixed share of the items. Texas, Illinois and North Carolina report this way.
70% correct
A straight share of the scored items. Georgia, Florida, New York, Ohio and New Jersey use it; the arithmetic is worked below.
Pretest items
Unscored questions mixed into the exam. They don't move your result, so answer each item as if it counts.

Pretest items carry no score, so they stay out of the math. Texas, Illinois and North Carolina report a scaled score, which this arithmetic can't convert. Figures from each state's bulletin, checked October 8, 2026.

Pass marks in practice

Is there a separate pass mark for the state-law part?

The pass marks above are what each bulletin lists for the exam. Illinois works differently: each line has a General and a State exam, and both for a line must be passed within 90 days (Pearson VUE Illinois handbook, checked October 8, 2026).

Does Michigan use one cut for both lines?

Not when you take them apart. The combined 16-81 exam passes at 74%; taken separately, Property needs 75% and Casualty 74% (PSI Michigan bulletin, checked October 8, 2026).

Does California really pass the P&C exam at 60%?

Yes. The California Department of Insurance lists a 150-item exam, 3 hours and 60% to pass for the combined exam (checked October 8, 2026). The California P&C license page covers the rest of the route.

How should I read my practice scores?

By the misses more than the total. If they cluster in one coverage part, or in EXCEPT items, that is where the next session goes. The question counts by state give you the denominator for your exam.
